As part of my MA Research titled Intimate Immensity, I have created works inspired by poetry, journaling, gestural drawing, and stream of consciousness. The project is a visual exploration of the interplay between physical gestures of painting and mark-making and the ephemeral nature of thoughts and emotions.
While the paintings can be seen for their colour and composition from a distance, it is only on closer inspection that the layers and intricacies are revealed. The visibility of the linen edges suggests that what is presented is just a fragment of a larger narrative or experience. This approach is an invitation to the viewer to contemplate the complexity and transience of human emotions and perceptions.
The works on paper, exhibited currently at Gallery 1, use the gesture of writing to highlight the primacy of expression.By emphasising the speed of thoughts that surpass the ability of the writing hand to capture them, the works highlight the limitations of verbal expression.
The use of books, journals, artist books, and scrolls as formats for expression further reinforces these themes of the limits of language. These objects traditionally hold narratives, thoughts, and ideas within their pages, yet the artist's exploration suggests that even these mediums may fall short in fully encapsulating the depth and fluidity of human experience. By allowing viewers to engage with these forms, I encourage them to contemplate the nuances of communication and the inherent challenges of conveying the richness of the inner world through language alone.
